Give Mister Softee a Run for His Money
September 12th, 2011 | Posted by in NYC Food Tours
Despite the end of summer, I still thought it only fitting to write a post about one of my favorite food trucks in the city. Long gone are the days of just “street meat” chicken and rice. Many of the food trucks sprinkled over the city are more gourmet than some of the restaurants. On the Food Truck Tour, which is offered by Sidewalks of NY as one of their NYC food tours, they stop by the Big Gay Ice Cream truck. With a name like that, how could you not want to visit?!
The menu would make Mister Softee weep for his lack of creativity. No plain chocolate and vanilla cones allowed! Some of his signature cones/cups include the Salty Pimp (vanilla ice cream, Dulce de Leche, sea salt, chocolate dip), Monday Sundae (twist ice cream, Nutella lined cone, Dulce de Leche, sea salt, whipped cream), and the Gobbler (vanilla ice cream, pumpkin butter, crushed graham crackers, whipped cream, craisins).
The daily specials are a must to try because they’re here today and gone tomorrow. He’s big on fun, taste, and weird toppings like olive oil and sea salt, cayenne pepper, and wasabi pea dust. The freakier, the better. He can usually be found near Union Square but he frequently changes his location on the weekend. He’ll always serve you delicious ice cream with a smile and it’s the perfect ending to a New York walking tour. His truck closes after October, so book a spot today!
